"When we love our own bodies, they respond. When we send our love to the Earth, she responds. For our own bodies are 70% water. And the earth's surface, also, is 70% water. And we have seen before our eyes the proof that water is far from inanimate, but is actually alive and responsive to our every thought and emotion. Perhaps, having seen this, we can begin to really understand the awesome power that we possess, through choosing our thoughts and intentions, to heal ourselves and the earth. If only we believe." Reminder: The World Health Organisation’s most recent World Health Statistics 2007 The four leading causes of death globally in 2030 are projected to be ischaemic heart disease from high blood pressure and high cholesterol, stroke, HIV/AIDS and chronic obstructive lung disease. Tobacco-related deaths are projected to rise from 5.4 million in 2005 to 6.4 million in 2015 and 8.3 million in 2030. Tobacco is projected to kill 50% more people in 2015 than HIV/AIDS and to be responsible for 10% of all deaths. This important statistic identifies again the disturbing rise in chronic lifestyle diseases, such as diabetes, depression, high blood pressure and high cholesterol, leading to stroke, heart attack and eventually heart disease. It is of utmost importance for companies, the workplace and individuals to address the chronic diseases (or health challenges) themselves, but even more importantly, also identify those with high normal values as a high risk where preventative and wellness interventions can make a real difference to prevention of future disease, risk reduction, sick leave, presenteeism and absenteeism figures. These are all preventable and measurable conditions that respond well to natural remedies, wellness interventions and stress management. This confirms a similar trend in South Africa, as the Medical Research Council Report released May 2006, shows: Report: ‘Chronic Diseases of Lifestyle in South Africa: 1995-2005’: - 6 million SA’s - hypertension
- 5 million - high blood cholesterol
- 1,5 million - diabetes
- > 7 million smokers
- Chronic diseases killed 565 people daily in 2000.
Chronic diseases of lifestyle are responsible for 37% of deaths in South Africa, second only to HIV / AIDS (39%) - 2003 / 4 SA Health Review Comment: By the year 2010, chronic diseases such as hypertension, high cholesterol, diabetes will kill 666 South Africans daily. Add to that, HIV/Aids and the figure becomes even higher. Considering the increase from the year 2000 to 2010, it clearly indicates that we have to look at more effective ways to address the problem. All the current anti- campaigns and awareness struggles aren’t working. Maybe a broader, different perspective, a wholistic look at the human being and the energy field, natural medicine and wellness, spiritual and emotional issues, might get us closer to finding a real and lasting solution. - Tuesday 24 July 10h00-12h30: Practical Stress Management by Dr Arien van der Merwe. Positive stress helps us to thrive, perform well, be creative and productive, and adds anticipation and excitement to our lives. It can result in a new lease on life and an enthusiastic creative approach to our work and environment, enabling us to enjoy life intensely. The quick stress response also helps us to survive physical threats to our lives. We all thrive under a certain amount of stress. Deadlines, competition, confrontations, and even our own frustrations, suffering and sorrows add experience, depth and enrichment to our lives and help us to grow and evolve as human beings. Negative or unmanaged distress, however, can lead to physical symptoms, burn-out and even disease and depression. This workshop will take you on a short journey through your body, mind, the calm centre point in the see-saw of human emotions and soul support, to develop and maintain inner balance and resilience to stress.
