Short Course in Peer Educator TrainingPresented by Health Stress Management (Pty) Ltd Course presenter, developer: Dr Arien van der MerweBRIEF DESCRIPTION This practical course provides delegates with relevant knowledge, values and attitudes concerning peer educator training (PET). There is a recognised need for a broader approach to health and wellness, than the previous emphasis on only HIV/Aids. The PET program will encourage an integrated approach to addressing all the chronic diseases of lifestyle. Delegates are equipped with the basic knowledge and practice to become peer educators in private companies, government departments, NGOs, schools, communities and service provider organisations. COURSE PROGRAMME| Day 1: | Definitions & models of wellness, peer educator training, and a long term vision for wellness | | Day 2: | Basic anatomy & physiology. Stress management, nutrition, fitness and wellness. Thoughts & emotions. The chronic diseases of lifestyle (CDL's). | | Day 3: | The wellness approach. High blood pressure, high cholesterol, heart attack, stroke. Immune system health. Diabetes mellitus. | | Day 4: | Practical and/or written examination to qualify for a certificate issued and endorsed by Health Stress Management (Pty) Ltd. |
LEARNING OUTCOMESAfter completion of this course, delegates should be able to: - Define and conceptualise wellness, peer educator training and understand the important effect that this approach holds for lasting health and wellness behaviour change
- Understand the meaning of an integrative approach to health and wellness
- Use an integrated model to address the management of the CDL's (or rather called health challenges)
- Understand the benefit of regarding HIV/AIDS as one of the CDLs and not a loose-standing entity
- Present a series of lectures to their peers
WHO SHOULD ENROL?All wellness coordinators and practitioners, adult education trainers, educators, NGO's, EAP & HR professionals, occupational health nursing professionals, workplace and community service volunteers, as well as other health care practitioners. Delegates are not required to have previous professional training, but professionals such as physiotherapists, dieticians, social workers, psychologists will benefit from this course. ADMISSION REQUIREMENTSProspective delegates should have a grade 12 qualification. Previous exposure to biology and/or the health sciences is an advantage, but not a prerequisite for enrolment. COURSE PRESENTERSThe course will be presented by Dr Arien van der Merwe, medical doctor, author and specialist health and wellness service provider. COURSE STRUCTUREAlthough the format will be dominated by lectures, the course will be enriched by practical workshop sessions. This implies active participation on the part of the delegates. If time allows, each delegate will be given the opportunity to deliver a presentation. The course will be presented primarily in English. Delegates will, however, be accommodated in both English and Afrikaans. ASSESSMENT AND ACCREDITATIONA certificate issued by Health Stress Management (Pty) Ltd will be awarded to delegates who successfully comply with the requirements by passing a practical and/or written examination that will take place on the last day of the course.
